It's the aroma that draws strollers into the new Piroshky, Piroshky in Pioneer Square, and it's the Russian comfort food and family feel that makes them stay.

The latest Piroshky, Piroshky joint has the Kotelnikov family stamped all over it -- literally. One wall is covered with enlarged family photos and mementos. A black-and-white photo of the children decorating Christmas cookies back in the Soviet Union, a postcard of their native Tallinn, Estonia, and the document giving the family permission to leave their homeland -- all give visitors a glimpse of the Kotelnikovs.

Piroshky, Piroshky has been a family bakery for the last decade, though it continues to evolve. Vladimir Kotelnikov, who brought his family to Seattle in 1989 and opened the original Pike Place Market store a few years later, no longer runs the business. Instead, he wrote an autobiography called "Piroshky With an Accent," for sale at the bakery's counters. His son, Oliver, is the one now pulling baking sheets out of the large ovens.
